Stop Teeth Grinding

Bruxism is the medical term used to describe grinding of the teeth. While this may not sound serious, it can become that way if not taken care of promptly. Bruxism can lead to TMJ dysfunction, chipping of the teeth and severe pain. The good news is that there are ways to stop teeth grinding. The most popular remedy is to use a night guard which provides a cushion between the upper and lower teeth. These are similar to the guards used by athletes but worn at night while sleeping.

There are a few different kinds of night guards to try. Some are adjustable and can be fit to your mouth size easily. Others are boil and bite, which means you boil the guard (usually made of flexible silicone) in water, allow it to cool a few seconds then mold it to your teeth. Doctor's brand is one maker of mouth guards that come in both Classic and Advanced Comfort sizes. The Advanced Comfort is a bit smaller than the Classic which makes it more comfortable for most people.

Your dentist can also make a mouth guard to prevent bruxism. This may be your best bet because the dentist will take a mold of your teeth and create the ideal guard for your needs. There are different types of bruxism guards offered by dentists to conform to the type of problem you have. While a dental guard is more expensive than a store bought one, it lasts longer and is guaranteed to fit perfectly. Whether you choose a store bought guard or one crafted by a dentist, you will need to allow some time for adjustment. It may feel uncomfortable at first to sleep in a mouth guard but you will get used to it.

Along with using a mouth guard, there are various other ways to stop teeth grinding. Myofascial trigger point release done by a qualified professional may help relax the jaw muscles and ease pain. You may also want to consider acupuncture or massage, of course none of these alternative therapies should be done without your doctor's consent. Even implementing stress relief techniques like meditation and deep breathing may help especially if your bruxism is tension related. Your doctor may also be able to show you exercises to keep your jaw relaxed during the day.
