Mouth Guard Grinding

If you suffer from bruxism, which is the medical term used to describe grinding of the teeth, you're not the only one. Many people have this problem and quite a few of them are unaware of it because they suffer from sleep bruxism. They only find out that the grinding is a problem when their sleeping partner tells them, their dentist tells them or they start experiencing jaw pain. Left untreated, bruxism can cause painful TMJ issues. Luckily, mouth guard grinding products can help a great deal when chosen and used properly.

For individuals who have mild bruxism it may be possible to nip the problem with a store bought mouth guard. The most popular are called boil and bite. This means you drop the guard in boiling water for a few seconds to make it pliable, then put it in your mouth and gently bite down to form an impression. While some store bought mouth guards have a size like small, medium or large others are one size fits all. You'll find these guards in the toothpaste aisle of your local supermarket, drugstore or discount department store, ranging in price from under $10 to as much as $50.

If your bruxism has become a serious problem in that you are experiencing pain in your TMJ area or your dentist informs you it is affecting your teeth in a negative way, you may need a dental mouth guard. Your dentist can take an impression of your mouth and create a guard especially for your specific problem. Many of these mouth guards are designed to be worn overnight, so it is imperative that they fit comfortably and work correctly. Whether you use a dental guard or a store bought one it may take awhile to get used to the sensation of a mouth guard.

In addition to trying mouth guard grinding products, you may want to consult with your physician. He or she can evaluate your medical condition and even the medications you may be taking to see if there is an underlying cause for the bruxism that can be remedied medically. In some cases stress causes bruxism, as do certain pharmaceuticals. Another thing to consider is alternative healing strategies like massage and acupuncture, which may work well together with traditional dental and medical treatments.
